No One Loves to Instagram Her Bags as Much as Olivia Culpo—Here are Her Best
THIS FORMER MISS UNIVERSE IS WORLDY, AND SO IS HER COVETABLE BAG COLLECTION
Guys, I have a confession to make. I am girl-crushing hard on Olivia Culpo. For those of you that don’t know her, Olivia Culpo is a former Miss Universe with over 1.8 million followers on Instagram. She has quite the enviable collection of designer bags, and not only is she seen toting around a different bag for every day of the week, but her personal style is pretty darn good, too. I love that Olivia not only carries the trendiest bags like the Gucci Dionysus and the Céline Luggage Tote, but also carries some lesser-known designers too. She is, in essence, one of us. We took a peak inside Olivia Culpo’s bag collection via her snaps and shares on Instagram. Below are some of her best bag looks.
FOR ALL THOSE TIMES YOU NEED SOMETHING IN BETWEEN A TOTE BAG AND A SUITCASE
I'm not a big traveller when it comes to multi-week, trans-global excursions, partly because I'm a millennial who pays her own rent in New York City and partly because I just hate being on airplanes for more than a few hours. What I do fairly frequently, though, is take domestic traps that last a few days, and in those situations, I feel sort of silly packing a full suitcase, especially since the smallest one I have is still pretty big. Enter: the weekend bag.
Weekend bags are smaller than a suitcase but bigger than the tote you might carry on to an airplane if you checked your suitcase. They're big enough to hold enough changes of clothes and toiletries for a couple of days, along with your laptop and whatever else you don't want to part with for a long weekend. They're the goldilocks of travel bags.
They're also quite useful during this time of year, when the weather starts to warm and lots of people take an extra day off here and there to head to the nearest beach, lake, large swimming pool or other weather-appropriate getaway. If got a couple of those on the calendar myself, and if you do too, here are some options to get you there in style. Our picks range from under a hundred bucks to nearly four grand, so when we say there's something for everyone, we mean it.
I may not have been around for the Swinging ‘60s (I’m not that old!), but there’s a lot to love about the generation – Twiggy, white go-go boots, Balenciaga, the Beatles, Catherine Deneuve in Belle du Jour, and of course, bags! This was the decade when women finally broke out of the tweed jacket/chain bag combo and embraced their personal style. See which iconic pieces they did it with…
Mulberry’s Willow is the ultimate office to evening accessory – namely because it’s two in one (a work tote and an envelope clutch)! Sometimes a bag needs more flash for me to fall in love, yet here the function is what has me oohing and ahhing. Bring the tote to work, then at the end of the day, remove the front pouch with a couple of quick zips and you’re ready to play. It’s not one of those tiny, useless pouches, either – the generous size makes it a great choice even for daytime. Zipper edges give the clutch a unique look on its own, but keep in mind that you can’t carry the tote without it reattached (it would look like something’s missing). Since Kate Moss debuted the first Willow last year, it’s become available in a number of delicious hues, and I’m going with mushroom. The neutral will look great year-round, making an already versatile bag even more wearable!
Psychedelic Pucci Bag
You didn’t need to take LSD in the ‘60s to have a psychedelic experience – you just needed to buy a Pucci ! Rainbow velvet bags are hard to come by these days, so for a Frugal find, try Moyna’s colorful sequined clutch.
Courrèges Mod Bag
André Courrèges helped propel the Mod trend to full-on mania with his 1964 “Space Age” collection – think bright colors, geometric shapes, and PVC mini skirts (he and Mary Quant both claim to have invented the mini!). This orange tote is an update on one of his best-selling bags from the time. For a modern take on the style, check out Furla’s rubber satchel.
Mary Quant Flower Bag
This was the flower power generation – blossoms flourished all throughout fashion. The daisy was Mary Quant’s logo, but Betsey Johnson (herself a member of Andy Warhol’s Factory scene) is also no stranger to florals. Satisfy your inner flower child with her Having a Field Daisy bag.
Paco Rabanne Chainmail Bag
Chainmail may not be the most sensible thing to design a bag out of, but the success of Paco Rabanne’s Le 69 – named for the year it was released – was undeniable. If it’s a little too hefty for you (in price and weight), Laura B has a Disco bag alternative with some added python for good measure.
Other Brands
Is it possible to ever tire of a good animal print? Looking at the latest crop of wild cat and jungle creature motifs, I have to say no, it’s not possible! In the spectrum of patterns, the animal print is about as neutral and versatile as they come. Which is why a sassy metallic clutch or a spotty paneled tote should be a mainstay in every self-respecting Snob’s wardrobe.
Time’s Arrow Haircalf Mini Jo Tote: With detail-oriented structure and plenty of great features (the interior has multiple organizational pockets), this tote reads more luxe than the price tag suggests.
Tory Burch Kira Leopard-Print Calf-Hair and Leather Shoulder Bag:icon Pick up this perfectly sized flap-front shoulder style, and I dare you to not carry it at least a couple times a week.
Miu Miu Pony Animal-Print Shoulder Bag:icon I love a pop of unexpected feminine color this time of year, and this pale pink spin has me looking at leopard in a whole new way.
Tamara Mellon Dazzle Animal-Print Calf-Hair Clutch:icon Tamara’s relatively new eponymous line shines, thanks to her great sense of style. And this abstracted zebra-stripe clutch, featuring unique hardware as the handle, will shine all through the night.
Snob Essentials Leopard-Print Tote:icon We designed our own tote to seamlessly take you from to work to play. The smart shape reads business, while the leopard panel makes for a splash of fun.
Fur bags may not keep us warm like our coats and vests do, but there’s something special about them. Much like pumpkin spice lattes (and pumpkin anything, really), these are luxuries best enjoyed during a certain time of year – and that time is now. It’s one thing to snap a Fendi bug onto your bag on the first day of summer. It would be another to break out a full fur tote. Another tip to keep in mind? One fluffy accessory is chic. Any more than that and you chance looking like Bigfoot!

The four big Fashion Weeks in London, Milan, New York and, of course, Paris, gave us directions on what types of bags to wear this season. Down the runway, it was all about backpacks and all that is related to ‘travel-chic’, bags that match perfectly with your outfit, bags that have words and writing on them, messenger bags, brightly colored bags, bags with metallic chains, and handbags with added prints and graphics. They all look beautiful but, unfortunately, they are not very animal friendly. So here’s a list of environment and animal-friendly bags to replace them with while also keeping with the trend.
#1. Backpacks and ‘travel chic’. Yes, backpacks are a must this season. They’re fun, spacious, comfortable and full of young vibrations. This year saw the return of the hard case as well, so it’s all about traveling in style. Our favorite designers have added beautiful and creative backpacks to their collections, to make sure every fashionista out there stays trendy even in the rainiest of falls and coldest of winters.
But alternatives are numerous and you can find beautiful vegan backpacks everywhere. They can be made of the classic canvas, felt, PVC or even faux leather if you really want to go the extra mile and keep it in trend. Your choices are limitless and all you need is a bit of creativity. There are even tutorials out there on how to make your own backpack, using old jeans, if you prefer a denim one. Or you could also hit the streets with a classic canvas backpack, like the one I found on Serbags.
#2. Perfectly matched bags. There’s this old rule most of us tried to adhere to: matching your bag to your shoes or your scarf. Well, hold on tight, because this season, designers such as Valentino, Chanel, Victoria Beckham, Alexander Wang and Tommy Hilfiger went with creative variations on this rule. And, luckily for vegans, these variations benefit greatly. Because most of these bags, in order to match the outfit perfectly, have been made out of the same materials, such as cotton, linen, acrylic, or other non-animal materials. This is great, because it means you can wear the bags right off the runway.
#3. Bags with words. The one who started the trend this year is none other than the ever playful Moschino, with their graffiti writings on suitcases. Vivienne Westwood joined in the game quickly and added not only words, but exclamation marks to her designs, because she really felt your bag needs to make a point. The easiest way to replicate this “verbal” design is to wear nice and creative tote bags. They are fun, can be found everywhere, go with almost anything and are really cheap. So they will make for a very good addition to your closet this fall.

#4. Messenger Bags. These ones belong to the ‘traveling trend’ which is so hot right now, along with the backpacks and the hard cases. They usually come in leather, indeed, but that’s not mandatory if you want to keep vegan. There are other options, such messenger bags made of denim, canvas, faux leather and even recycled ones, made from used coffee bean bags. If you need a bit of inspiration, the big designers sporting messenger bags on the runways this season are Misha Nonoo, Emilio Pucci, Chanel & Sass and Bide.
#5. Brightly colored bags. The runways were filled with them this season, because the trend is all about color and having fun. We are naturally drawn to the beautiful colors, and Dolce and Gabbana, Fendi and Valentino made sure we got what we came for. Most of them were leather and some were fur, so we’ll need to find vegan-friendly replacements. Luckily, it’s not difficult. We just need to find some boldly colored, mostly orange, because that was the color of choice on the catwalks, small handbags. Matt and Nat fit the description perfectly with this bright and beautiful faux leather handbag that looks good enough to eat.
#6. Metallic chains. Another element heavily present on this season’s runways were metallic chains attached to handbags. Like I previously mentioned, it’s all about having fun this autumn and adding some metal detailing to cookie handbags is one of the best ways to go. Metal chains have always looked good against the skin and that is one of the reasons they’re still in use today. There’s also a sense of glamour and luxury about them because they remind one of precious metal jewelry. And this is exactly what houses like Dior, Balenciaga, Chanel, Calvin Klein, Elie Saab, Miu Miu, Ralph Lauren and the list could go on, have banked on. Yes, it’s a big trend and the list is actually so long it seems like everyone sported at least one bag with metallic chains on it.
#7. Handbags with added prints and graphics. And I’m talking crazy, crazy prints, images, logos or even handbags shaped like different ordinary objects. We need to return to funky Moschino for an example and we can pick their boom box purse, with graffiti on it. However, if you want to keep vegan and also, if you’re not keen on carrying an ’80s boom box with you around town, but you still want to keep it funky, here are some other purses you might find interesting. There’s the small cassette player bag, instead of the big boom box. This might be the perfect replacement, actually. It’s virtually the same thing, but on a smaller scale and animal friendly. We also have the pepperoni pizza slice and the turquoise telephone shaped one, both perfect for dates.
The runway was filled with fund and funky bags this year, but unfortunately (and as usual) few were vegan. But all that is needed to beat the leather and fur trend is a bit of creativity and a lot of research.

Two days ago, Kim Kardashian did something that tends to garner her a lot of attention, both here and elsewhere: she carried an Hermès bag that was not in its original, fresh-from-the-boutique state. Kim's a pageview boon all over the Internet, so fashion sites were quick to pick up on the debut of her new Hermès Birkin, painted by none other than baby North. The problem, of course, was that the bag was clearly not a Birkin, but an Hermès Herbag. In the spirit of service (and of staying in our lane), we are here to provide some clarification.
Everyone from The Cut to Complex to Lucky Magazine (which has since corrected the error) called the bag a Birkin, and while it might be easy for a casual observer to conflate the iconic Birkin with the rest of Hermès' offerings, the brand makes about a zillion different bags. It's sort of like assuming that all dogs are shih tzus because that's what your parents had growing up, even though you've seen golden retrievers in the park and, hello, clearly not shih tzus. There's a whole diaspora of bags out there that people are missing out on, and that makes us sad.
To clear up any lingering confusion, we have created a handy-dandy visual guide to notable Hermès bags and their various degrees of not-Birkinness.

Hermès Kelly Bag
Status: Not a Birkin, but Also Famous
The Kelly is the most famous not-Birkins of all the not-Birkins, what with its structured shape, reach-around strap closure and name based on an iconic female celeb. Don't be fooled, though. It's still not a Birkin.

Hermès Haut Á Courroies Bag
Status: Like a Birkin That's Ready to Try Out for the NBA
The distinctive feature of this bag is that it's taller. A Birkin, but tall. Still not a Birkin tho.
3 / 6
Hermès Jypsiere Bag
Status: A Birkin for Millenials
The Jypsiere is pretty new, and its purpose is clear: use Birkin details to lure in younger customers who view the elbow-carried Birkin as too matronly and cumbersome. Also clear: not a Birkin, or a Birkin shoulder bag, or anything else but a Jypsiere.

Hermès Constance Bag
Status: The Birkin of Shoulder Bags
The Constance isn't a Birkin (it is a Constance), but it is the brand's most well-known and exclusive shoulder bag, and that makes it similar to the idea of a Birkin. (It's still a Constance.)

Hermès Herbag
Status: Way More Like a Kelly Than a Birkin
If fashion writers had taken a cursory glance at Kim's new bag and assumed it was some sort of weird, special edition Kelly, that would have been understandable--the bags have similar top-handle structure and wrap-around flap closures. The finish, though, is entirely different.

Hermès Evelyne Bag
Status: Are You Blind?
If you look at this soft, casual bag with its enormous perforated logo and think, "Silly Hermès, trying to fool me into thinking this isn't a Birkin!" then maybe you are not cut out for this handbag life that we're livin' over here.
